Beyond Gold: What it Takes to Stay at the Top
Four-time Olympian Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone is a world record-holding American sprinter and hurdler. At just 16, she made the U.S. Olympic team for the 2016 Rio Summer Olympics, becoming the youngest U.S. track and field Olympian since 1972. During the Olympic trials, she set a junior world record in the 400m hurdles. McLaughlin-Levrone solidified her place as a track superstar at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, winning gold in the 400m hurdles with a world record time of 51.46 seconds, as well as another gold in the 4x400m relay. This past summer, at the Paris Olympics, she further cemented her status as a track and field legend by becoming the first woman to win consecutive gold medals in the 400m hurdles, breaking her own world record for the sixth time with a time of 50.37 seconds. She followed this up just days later with another gold in the 4x400m relay. Before turning professional, McLaughlin-Levrone competed at the University of Kentucky and was named Gatorade National High School Track and Field Athlete of the Year for two consecutive years (2015-2016, 2016-2017). Born in Dunellen, New Jersey, she now resides in Los Angeles, California, with her husband, Andre Levrone, Jr.
